Types of Malaysia work permit

  • Malaysia Employment Pass: For highly skilled foreign nationals in managerial or technical roles. Validity 1โ€“5 years, renewable.
  • Malaysia Temporary Employment Pass: Two categories: Foreign Worker Temporary Employment Pass (manufacturing, construction, plantation, agriculture, services) and Foreign Domestic Helper (FDH) Temporary Employment Pass. Valid for 2 years.

Malaysia work permit eligibility

Employment Pass requirements: Necessary qualifications, relevant work experience, monthly basic salary thresholds (allowances excluded) as per ESD Announcement 266 effective 1 June 2026:

  • Category III: RM 5,000โ€“9,999/month (RM 7,000โ€“9,999 for MRS sector)
  • Category II: RM 10,000โ€“19,999/month
  • Category I: RM 20,000+/month

Temporary Employment Pass (TEP): Age 18โ€“45, citizen of approved nations; FDH requires women aged 21โ€“45.

Professional Visit Pass: Employed by non-Malaysian company; requires sponsor in Malaysia.

Malaysia Employment Pass 2026 Policy Changes (Effective 1 June 2026)

  • New salary thresholds: Cat I RM 20,000+, Cat II RM 10,000โ€“19,999, Cat III RM 5,000โ€“9,999
  • Cumulative duration caps: Cat I & II maximum 10 years total EP; Cat III maximum 5 years
  • Local Succession Plan required for Cat II and III employers
  • Category III EP holders can sponsor dependants for the first time
  • Basic salary only โ€” allowances excluded from threshold calculation

What is ePASS?

Launched in March 2025, ePASS is the mandatory digital portal for all EP applications. Your Malaysian employer registers and submits your application โ€” you do not apply independently. Once ESD approves, you receive an email notification. All EP renewals and amendments are now processed through ePASS.

Dependent Benefits for Malaysia Employment Pass Holders

Category Details
Dependent Pass / Family Reunification Spouses and unmarried children under 18 can join. Main EP holder must earn at least RM 5,000/month. Dependent passes linked to main EP validity.
Spouse Work Rights Spouses holding a Dependent Pass do not automatically receive work rights. Must apply for Letter of Approval or obtain their own EP.
Children's Education Children can enrol in private and international schools. Public schools mainly for citizens.
Healthcare Access Dependent Pass holders can access public healthcare at subsidised foreigner rates. Private hospitals also available.
Child Support Benefits No universal child benefits for foreign residents. Some employers offer private health insurance.
Childcare Support Private nurseries and daycares available; costs relatively affordable compared to Western countries.

Pathway to Malaysia PR

Category Details
Long-Term Residency (RP-T) Apply for Residence Pass-Talent after 3 consecutive years on Employment Pass. Valid for 10 years, renewable.
RP-T Requirements 3 consecutive years on EP, minimum monthly salary RM 15,000, valid employment, clean record, 2+ years Malaysian income tax, 5+ years work experience, relevant qualifications.
Permanent Residency (PR) Typically available after 5 years of continuous legal residence. Requires continuous residence, financial stability, clean record, strong contributions to economy/society.
Citizenship / Naturalisation Generally after 10โ€“12 years continuous residence. Basic Bahasa Malaysia proficiency required.
Dual Citizenship Malaysia does not allow dual citizenship. Indian nationals must renounce Indian citizenship but can apply for OCI.
